I Would Prefer Not To
Feb. 22nd, 2005 09:23 amI spent the weekend watching a few films. Friday was "Assualt on Precinct 13" (the original), which was actually very good. I particularly liked the music and the weird zombie gang guys who just keep coming and keep getting shot.
Saturday I saw "Grave of the Firflies" and "Bartleby". An odd mix. GOTF is quite sad wheras Bartleby is just plain kookie. I was tempted to dismiss it half way through but saw it out to the end. Despite exclaiming "WTF" a lot, "Bartleby" does actually have a message: that people spend their lives, especially their working lives, consenting to doing things they would prefer not to. When they decide that they would rather not put themselves out for other people society (offices) reject them and cast them out. Ultimately Bartleby dies because he has been rejected by society for not conforming, not giving up his free will for the "greater good".
And on Sunday I watched "Blue Velvet". Pretty cool, but it was a cheapo DVD and the print was crap.
