It seems I do lots of things, but then I realise mainly it's tidying my room, and mooching about.

Anyway... this weekend I persuaded the folks to take me to Whitstable. This involved mum kipping in the back of the car, Dad driving and me drifting in and out of sleep during the 90 minute journey to the Kent coast. I'd heard about Whitstable on R4s Excess Baggage, and was particularly keen to sample an oyster, much as it goes against my vegetarian diet. I also discovered that you can get Samphire in Whitstable. This is also known as Sea Grass, and grows on salt marshes. As for as I know you have to get it from special 'foragers' as it grows wild on salt marshes somewhere.

Well, I had my oyster, which was... fleeting. I smothered it in lemon juice and then tipped it down the hatch. There is a certain charm in swallowing an ugly looking sea creature in a barnacle encrusted shell, though it didn't give me the horn... which is probably best. I also found some Samphire in the fish market. It's lovely stuff, like salty asparagus. I boiled it for about two minutes this evening and then drizzled butter and grated parmesan over the top. Yummy. I highly recommend a trip to the sea side purely so you can get some.

Which reminds me: many years ago I read a story called "The Samphire". I'm intrigued to know who wrote it. Will have to do some nosing.
