I had a bout of this on Friday night, though it was brought on by excitement more than anything.  Then Saturday night, as I was in a strange bed, in a pension in Nagano.

Usually the insomnia comes and goes in phases.  January and February were bad, but at the moment I'm sleeping well.  I expect things to start getting worse again come May or June when the weather hots up and I start fretting about work and money a bit more as I look forward to quitting my current job and going out by myself.

Things I've found that have worked this time: more exercise - tiring out myself in the gym in the morning before work seems to do the trick.  Avoiding alcohol, especially beer, a few hours before bed.
