I finished "Geek Love" by Katherine Dunn yesterday.
I quite enjoyed it, and was glad to read a book where the characters cause such a confliction of emotion in you. Do you like Arty, or do you hate him? Is he acting in the best interests of his family or is he just a bastard? As for Oly, whilst my sympathies lie with her (well, she is the narrator) she did just seem such a push over... and nothing good happened to her during the whole book. Not that it has to. Mary Lick was a despicable character, but then Miranda wasn't too likeable either. Oly moans about her "crazy slut of a daughter" (sic) a bit and you almost wish she did have her tail cut off for being so shallow.
Now reading "Rebecca", which I've been putting off for ages. I have a thing against popular books. If it's a bestseller it must be crap, is generally my rule. With the odd exception this also works for films.
