Prospecting

Back when I was 11 or 12 years old my school held a "General Election" to mimic the real one going on at the time (I guess it must have been 1991). I was the candidate for the Green Party and I recall being laughed at quite alot for my environmentalist stance - laughed at by my peers, and condescended to by the adults. My Mum reminded me of this last year, just before I came over here. We were talking about global warming and how I had decided to move my savings to a bank which funds environmental projects - sustainable resources, organic farming etc.

"Everyone laughed at you then," she said. "But you were right all those years ago. No one listened."

I'd like to take the road of rubbing it people's faces in the fact that I WAS right to be concerned at so young an age. But that does not make things better. It does not right the situation Earth faces now. Sometimes, I look at the predictions for climate change and lament that these warnings were not taken seriously 10 years ago when the first wave of environmentalism hit England (in my memory, at least). I look at the lists of animals facing extinction, of those which have disappeared from the planet, and I feel utterly helpless. How can I, one person, make a difference when I am surrounded by people who deny the facts they are presented with, and continue to live as selfishly as they do?

But, I will continue to make what little differences I can, regardless of how others act. Unfortunately, I think it's too late.

Today is World Biodiversity Day. If you take a look at [livejournal.com profile] greygirlbeast's journal for today you'll find rather moving footage of the extinct Tasmanian Tiger, as well as links to the WBD site and an article on animals facing extinction. Just by clicking on the links you're doing something to improve the situation.
